Took my mom and step dad to my mom's brother's place recently. I have been visiting the house my uncle and aunt bought in the '60s for nearly 60 years. The two old siblings are not real well and are lucky their partners are able to help them out and maintain both their independence.
We had a lovely dinner. African chicken and biscuits, made by my aunt, and apple salad prepared by my uncle. Apple salad was something my grandmother made often and which her son has doggedly kept making for special occasions.
We drank cider. We drank wine. We had a jolly old time.
When it was time to go my mom and her brother shared a very long embrace. They know they are suffering. They know haven't much time left. They know every embrace they share may be their last.
It was fucking beautiful. I hope my sisters and I will share similar embraces 15 or 20 years from now.
