Been culling my library this week. Found the 1972 Who's Who in Baseball. I should chuck it but I probably won't. Not yet at least. It reminded me how much I once loved baseball. Watched every game I could on television but never got to Nat Bailey Stadium until I was in my 20s. Is not a better place to drink beer and eat peanuts in all of Canada.
I played neighbourhood and schoolyard ball, never organized ball as that would have seen me missing church which my parents were sure would damn me to Hell for sure. Later I played slo-pitch which was so much fun. A few before, during and post-game beers helped with that. I played every position but 1st base. Played catcher once and an opposing player bounced his bat off home plate in to my face. Fucker. Got even with him with a high, hard slide into 2nd base the very next inning.
Baseball highlight of my life was seeing the Expos and the Blue Jays play at BC Place about 40 years ago.
Then the fucking Americans stole my Expos. Not a lot of Canadians cared about that but I sure as fuck did. It was a sign of things to come.
