It seems necessary I add a little context to the political pickle moment my country of Canada finds itself in. Here goes...
The reason Canadians generally wish not to be annexed by the openly expressed expansionist fascism south of our border is both our freedom and our society is so much stronger than America's and here is why: our freedom and society were strengthened decades and decades ago because my country's rich were afraid the workers were going to take over our country. The Canadian Co-operative Federation (CCF) organizing efforts across Canada pre-1962 scared the befuckingjesus out of the rich. Recall this was not all that long after the Russian Revolution. Scared them so much they thought maybe if they did not treat workers so bad maybe they could keep their money and their political control.
Which is exactly what happened. High unionization rates in the '60s and '70s also helped. A lot. And unionization rates remain high enough (about 15% of private sector workers are union) to influence affairs in this country even if they do not have the clout they did last century.
America is another kettle of fish. Private sector unionization there has fallen below 10%. Any group representing less than 10% of the population is considered marginal and that is why the fascists are hard at it down there. There is no effective opposition.
Canadians, for the time being at least, want to retain our paved roads society and do not want the dirt road society being set up down there. Not only is Canadian society different than America's, it is better and it is looking better and better by the minute.
