It was my school mates in England who insisted I support West Ham United. I was considering Fulham, who West Ham had recently thrashed in the FA Cup. I shall be grateful forever I was steered from the Cottagers to the Hammers. It has been an uneasy entertaining near 50 year ride.
This past weekend West Ham upset Arsenal at their home ground. That may not be an UEFA Cup win but to West Ham fans all around the globe it felt like just such a victory. A feeling much like the one Vancouver Canuck fans get when their team wins two in a row.
I did not have any trouble with any football club's fan base except Arsenal's. The dirty fuckers. On the return journey from east to west London I stopped in a train station to tie my shoe. That separated me ever so slightly from my mates and I was soon face to face with with an Arsenal supporter who made a simple request of me. "Your scarf or your balls?" He had an umbrella pointed at my balls so I handed him my scarf. I had the opportunity to to do some damage to the misguided lad but I knew there were a dozen of his kind hiding around a corner if things went wrong with their mate.
Arsenal 0 - West Ham 1. A fitting a scoreline benefitting my massive side for once.
