A Good Day to be Canadian that Could be so Much Better

To celebrate the Canadian men's vanquishing of Venezuela in the quarter finals of COPA 2024 allow me to take you back to Canada Day. The first Canada Day on which I attended my fair city's national wing ding and fireworks display.

The crowd exceeded 10,000. I estimated there to be 12,000 in attendance. 12,000 people from every ethnic background on the planet with the possible exception of indigenous representation. They, of course, have every reason to not celebrate my country if in fact there were no indigenous there. It was too big a crowd for me to have clocked everyone there.

I was proud to be part of such a diverse group. Proud to be part of such a diverse country. If only my country would at last get down to fulfilling the need for genuine truth and reconciliation before I am buried in the cold earth with my ancestors.
